Malta
established diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago during a ceremony
held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 24 September 2009 on the
margins of the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Protocol on
the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malta and the Republic of
Trinidad and Tobago was signed by the Hon. Dr. Tonio Borg, Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, and the Hon. Paula
Gopee-Scoon Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and
Tobago. Both Ministers agreed to work
closer together in advancing the new relationship established between Malta and
the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The
two Ministers also exchanged views on the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of
Government Meeting to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in November 2009. Other issues discussed included the role of
small States in the Commonwealth and the United Nations as well as challenges
posed by climate change.

F. Borg - Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Malta to the United
Nations, H.E. Marina Annette Valère -
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United
Nations, and officials from the respective two delegations.
