The signing
ceremony establishing Diplomatic Relations between Malta and Nauru took place
at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York yesterday
Wednesday, 19th November 2008. The Protocol establishing
Diplomatic Relations was signed by H.E. Mr. Saviour F. Borg, Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Malta to
the United Nations, and by H.E. Ms. Marlene Moses Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Nauru to the United
Nations.
Following the
signing ceremony the two Ambassadors exchange views on the role of small States
in the activities of the United Nations as well as the vulnerabilities which
small States have to overcome because of their specific handicaps and as a
result of climate change. Ambassador Borg also explained the contribution
which Malta continues to make in assisting small islands States in a number of
areas including the online training programmes which benefit nationals and
diplomats from these small countries.
On her part, Ambassador Moses expressed her
profound thanks and appreciation for the lead which Malta continues to take in
a number of international fora including at the United Nations and the
Commonwealth to assist countries like Nauru. Present for the signing
ceremony were Dr. H. Bonavia, Deputy Permanent Representative, Mr. Walter
Mallia, Consul, and Mr. Claude Bonello, First Secretary. The Protocol
will now be deposited with the United Nations Secretary-General.
