Reference Number: PR210766, Press Release Issue Date: Apr 23, 2021

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo had a virtual meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet Jeria.

The meeting dealt with a number of important issues including irregular migration and the need for solidarity so that Malta no longer bears the disproportionate burden it is currently carrying. The minister and the high commissioner agreed on the need, above all, to address the root causes of this challenge which will otherwise continue to persist.

In this regard, Minister Bartolo stressed that unless countries of origin are given an equal platform to create wealth and jobs through fair trade and investment, migrants will continue to leave their homeland and seek a better life in other countries.

On the situation in Libya, Minister Bartolo said that Malta will continue its efforts towards the recognition of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Libya.

They also spoke about the reforms which are strengthening the rule of law and press freedom in Malta. Minister Bartolo reiterated the government’s commitment to keep working and implementing its programme of institutional reforms, toward a robust system of checks and balances and law enforcement without fear or favour.

During this meeting, the minister was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations Christopher Galea.
