The lack of solidarity on immigration within the EU is getting worse not better, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo told  the 77th meeting of the steering group International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD)which convened in Valetta, Malta.

‘Even Pope Francis, a great champion for migrants, made this point on 9 January 2017 to the diplomats gathered before him; that every country should take in as many as it can realistically accomodate. That it is unfair that there are countries who carry a disproportionate burden and others who remain indifferent, and don’t help them.’ said Minister Bartolo.

Minister Bartolo highlighted that the dialogue between the Northern and the Southern shore must not center on migration and both shores must sit down as equal partners and explore common ground and a common agenda to overcome the current stalemate and revitalise partnership across the two shores.

Minister Bartolo said that European Union and the African Union should go for a positive agenda and must work together to overcome the dangerous divide between the rights of refugees and migrants and the rights of citizens. Minister Bartolo postulated that is imperative to treat regular and irregular migrants with human dignity but also address the citizens in receiving countries and their concerns.

Minister postulated that when it comes to irregular migration we need to secure borders, fight human trafficking, and effective training and funding schemes to reintegrate returned irregular migrants in sustainable business activity in their country of origin.
