Malta ratifies the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage

On behalf of the Republic of Malta, First Secretary at the Embassy of Malta in Paris Robert John Micallef deposited the Instrument of Ratification on the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This following its official ratification on the 5th of March 2021, signed by Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo.

Adopted in November 2001, the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage is intended to enable states to better protect their submerged cultural heritage, mainly through: (i) their obligation to preserve underwater cultural heritage, (ii) ‘in situ’ preservation as the first option, (iii) no commercial exploitation, and (iv) training and information sharing.
