A Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in sport has been signed between Malta and Russia

Following bilateral talks between Minister Evarist Bartolo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Sochi, Russia, Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar led a delegation in Moscow.

Several meetings were held in the capital city, including with the Deputy Minister for Sport, Mr. Azat Kadyrov, wherein on behalf of the Ministry of Inclusion and Quality of Life, the Permanent Secretary signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in sport, covering the next five years and designed to bring together both athletes and sports experts through conferences, exchanges, events, sports training programmes and even research.

The Permanent Secretary also met with HE Sergey Vyazalov, Deputy Minister and Director General within the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and discussed bilateral issues related to the administration of existing agreements between the two countries. A meeting was also held with the Deputy Minister and Acting Head of the Department of Foreign, Economic, and International Relations of the Government of Moscow, Mr. Dridze Evgeny Borisovich, during which opportunities in the economic sector were discussed.

Upon the invitation of the Rector of the Diplomatic Academy of the same Ministry, Professor Alexander Yakovenko, Mr. Cutajar addressed an audience of students and academics in the hall of the same Academy, during which he explained Malta’s foreign policy framework and its operation in practice.

Mr Cutajar also paid a visit to the workshop of the renowned bronze sculptor, Mr Gregory Poitochky, where both sides explored methods of collaboration between the two peoples through art with the aim of promoting peace. 

Throughout his meetings in Moscow, the Permanent Secretary was accompanied by Malta’s Ambassador to Russia, H.E. Mr Pierre Clive Agius. 

On Saturday 29 May, Mr Cutajar also visited the city of St. Petersburg, where he met the Honorary Consul of Malta, Dr Igor Onokov and discussed the prospects of closer collaboration between communities in Malta and in St. Petersburg.

On Monday 31st May, the Permanent Secretary also visited the Vatican City State, where he held a courtesy meeting with HE Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary of the Holy See for Relations with Other States, during which they discussed bilateral ties between the two states. Mr Cutajar also had the opportunity to meet with Cardinal Peter Turkson, who heads the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, with whom he discussed possibilities for collaboration on development projects in Africa.
