Malta Day Celebrated in Berlin in the presence of the President of Malta

The 57th anniversary of Malta’s independence was celebrated in Berlin on Friday, September 24. On this occasion, the Ambassador of Malta to the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Vanni Xuereb, and his spouse, Charlò Baldacchino, hosted a reception at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski which is situated close to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The guests of honour were the President of Malta, His Excellency Dr George Vella and Mrs Miriam Vella and the State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Berger. The President was in Berlin on an official visit during which he met the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, among others.

Also present were the Apostolic Nuncio to Germany, Archbishop Nikola Eterović, ambassadors, the honorary consuls of Malta in Germany, government officials and various other distinguished guests including two former ambassadors of Malta to Germany. A sizeable number of Maltese living in Germany also attended. Three Maltese artists living in Germany, Daniel Borg, Tiziana Galea Schembri and Josanne Mifsud Pikutzki, exhibited their works of art in the rooms in which the reception was held.

The guests were addressed by Ambassador Xuereb, State Secretary Berger and President Vella. In his speech, the President of Malta spoke of the importance of a multilateralist approach in foreign affairs. The President also expressed his thanks to the German President for having hosted him and the Embassy of Malta to Germany for its cooperation in planning this visit.

Ambassador Xuereb thanked the Office of the President of Malta, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Air Malta for their support in the organisation of the event. Air Malta kindly donated two flight tickets that were drawn in a raffle during the reception.
