 Malta’s Ambassador Vanni Xuereb meets Berlin State Secretary Sawsan Chebli

 

The Ambassador of Malta to the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Vanni Xuereb, recently met the Representative to the Federal Government and State Secretary for Civic Commitment and International Affairs of the State of Berlin, Sawsan Chebli. Ambassador Xuereb was accompanied by Mark Abela, Deputy Head of Mission.


Speaking on the COVID-19 situation, Ambassador Xuereb noted that by now 92.7%% of the Maltese population is fully vaccinated and that after a rise in the number of infections at the beginning of the holiday season the numbers had gone down significantly due to swift and effective measures adopted.


The State Secretary and the Ambassador also discussed links between Malta and Berlin and  welcomed the resumption of direct flights by Air Malta between  Berlin and Malta whilst stressing of the importance of such a link to encourage tourism in both directions among others.

 

They also exchanged views on the worrying developments in Afghanistan, expressing serious concern about the unfolding events, as well as on the situation in the Middle East.

 

Views were exchanged on the upcoming elections in Germany. Ambassador Xuereb also expressed Malta’s appreciation for Germany’s strong support for the European Union especially for the small Member States.

 

State Secretary Chebli and Ambassador Xuereb also discussed possible initiatives to strengthen ties between Berlin and Malta in areas such as culture and education. The State Secretary stated that the Berlin Senate would be very happy to collaborate with the Maltese Embassy in initiatives intended to support Maltese nationals who are now living in Berlin.
