Ambassador Natasha Meli Daudey meets with the new OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media

On 19 February 2021, in Vienna, Ambassador Natasha Meli Daudey met with Teresa Ribeiro, the new OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media to discuss the current state of the media in Malta, and possible future collaboration.

The Ambassador briefed the OSCE Media Representative on the status of investigations and the ongoing judicial processes into the murder of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. Ribeiro noted the important steps taken by the Maltese authorities, while underscoring the need for full independence of the investigation, and for all those responsible, including perpetrators and masterminds, to face justice. 

Ribeiro also welcomed the decriminalization of defamation in Malta and encouraged the continuation of implementation practices to safeguard the work of journalists, for them to work unhindered and free of interference.  Ambassador Meli Daudey thanked the RFOM for the Office’s assistance in the drafting of the Media and Defamation Act and informed Ms Ribeiro of the other legal developments in Malta, including the adoption of the Whistleblower Protection Act. 

Meli Daudey also briefed Ribeiro on the current efforts undertaken in Malta to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the work of the media, challenges in countering mis- and disinformation, and the work being undertaken in Malta in the field of education in media literacy. 

The two looked forward to enhancing their future collaboration, particularly in the field of media literacy.
