On 12th February, His Excellency André Spiteri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to Kumamoto University. The Ambassador firstly visited the Faculty of Life Sciences in Honjo Campus, where he had an informal discussion with the Vice Dean of the Faculty, Professor Kazuya Yamagata and Associate Professor Norie Araki. The Vice Dean highlighted noteworthy facts about the University such as its education and research programs during a brief presentation.

Following the meeting, the Ambassador then visited Kurokami Campus, where he also paid a courtesy visit to President Shinji Harada and discussed issues such as academic exchanges and possible collaboration between Kumamoto University and the University of Malta.

The visit by the Ambassador followed a previous visit on the 22nd October 2019 to Kumamoto by the Director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking, Professor Richard Muscat, and Lecturer, Dr. Byron Baron, where they signed an academic and student exchange agreement with Kumamoto University. Ambassador Spiteri commented that this would be a first step for future collaboration between Kumamoto University and the University of Malta with the hope of creating more opportunities for both Maltese and Japanese students and researchers.
